Persuasive #1

Doing a persuasive speech proved to be tons easier do create. I was easier to think of subject and what to say about that subject. I choose to write about rights of religious minorities. To me this is something we all should be concerned about because it will ultimately affect you. But that is my view so writing about something that I am passionate about made that speech easier to present. I also had less difficulties speaking with passion and emphasis. I enjoyed research about different religion and their beliefs so that I could make points about the similarities. Over all I like doing persuasive speech over informative, I feel that I can express myself more with this type of speech.

Doing this informative speech, that was to be not on a controversial subject was hard. I am one that likes to start debates, so knowing that I couldn’t do that made it hard to find an interesting subject. Friends told me to talk about social security but I really don’t care at my age, though that could be a bad thing. But over all the speech want all right, I know I could have done a lot better knowing my public speaking skills. This is all a learning process and I have a lot of learning to do so that I can improve the art of impromptu speeches.

I found this speech easy to create because I have a great interest in what I want to be. Politics are of great importance to me so I can go on about the job oppertunities out there for me. It is getting easyer to give speeches with note cards but I still stutter through them a little. Hopefully that will start to improve. Maybe that is caused because I still don't like doing the speeches on tape. But the giving of the speech in general is an easier process.

I realized that I'm still not that great at speaking with just notes and not a full speech. But with this speech I learned that my community has more of an affect on my life that I thought. And maybe I should start behaving in the way that would reflect me and not just what everyone wants me to be. With doing these speeches I have found that I would rather give a speech infront of a thousand people than just a camera. I really have a problem thinking about that this will be watched so I'm not just talking to the camera I am talking to the people watching.

I thought that this was going to be an easy speech to present. But I have now found that after taking years of speech in 4-H, school, and church that I have conditioned myself to only give typed and memorized speeches with a paper infront of me. Now having to present speeches of the extep. type so this has been very hard for me to adjust to.But all in all the speech was really easy to prepare because I know myself and where I live well. I think that this speech was a way of realizing self and environment and the effects they have on eachother.

Online Research Exploration

All though this was a fairly easy assignment I found that the Nebraska Access web site was not as easy to maneuver through as it lead on. With the process of having to log on this would not be the site I would use for quick information. Goggling is a very easy process to use and delivers information to you quickly and efficiently. The Nebraska Access site would however provide you with credible information for research papers and the research need for this class’s speeches. I also had never utilized the news link on google.com so know I know that this a great search engine for future current event articles that I need to do for other classes in high school. It gets you directly to the issues that are pending in the world at the moment you need them. The assignment introduced me to new research sites that I would have never known about otherwise.

Speaking Event #2

Recently our church had our annual youth service Sunday. As part of that our youth group leader presented the sermon, while listening I made these observation about the style of her speech. The number one thing was that she did not use a style that related to the majority of the audience. Since it is church there is a variety of people with many different age groups. But in this sermon the language type that was chosen was not well thought out. It seemed like she was writing a paper for her professor she used larger words that are not part of a common Nebraskans vocabulary. By using these overwhelming words she didn’t truly connect with the congregation, which caused them not to give her their full attention. If she would have used simpler words that are closer to our vocabulary there would have been an improved connection and her point would have been better conveyed.

Speaking Event #1

As a program to get high school students out in the community, the school arranges for us to attend the Holdrege Rotary Club meetings. I listened to a speaker informing the local businesspersons about identity theft and how to prevent this. The speaker did a wonderful job of giving direct statements that were meaningful; she also had a power point that corresponded with the presentation. She did a great job of not sounding memorized but still knew her facts. She also spoke to the people in the audience instead of at them, which helps in making a connection. That made her sound confident with what she was presenting. It also made the presentation that she was giving more intriguing, since I am only 17 there was no real interest in this speech after about 5 minutes but she still kept my interest in what was being said. Overall the presentation was successful and raised the people’s interest level in identity theft.

This assignment was harder than I initially thought is would be. When I started all I could think about was does Adrian really care if I travel to my grandmother's or is that really traveling? I kind of made me doubt my self a lot. But overall, after I just decided that I would write what I wanted to write, I helped me figure out some things that I could talk about. I really didn't know what I was going to inform/ persuade Adrian about. I think I have some better ideas now.

Community Speaking Events

I am likely going to attend speaking events that pertain to school matters. Since I am still in high school I listen to a lot of teachers discuss/lecture on the subject that they teach. I also will attend church sermons and church council meeting as an outsider and insider. I would also like to attend a governmental meeting i.e. city council meeting or a day at the Unicameral.
